Training Opportunities in
Emotional Availability

For training on:

1) the observational EA Scales (Infancy/Early Childhood as well as Middle Childhood Versions), please contact webmaster@emotionalavailability.com for a copy of the manual for the 3rd edition and now the 4th edition of the Emotional Availability Scales and the distance-training videotapes and materials. This is a self-paced course to achieve a certificate of training.  This system has been widely used to assess the quality of parent-infant and parent-older child interactions, in both basic science research and in clinical intervention programs.

For in vivo trainings to use the EA Scales with Biringen, please also contact the above email address. This training is charted for 3-4 days, with reliability testing. Biringen trains both nationally and internationally.

Next scheduled training: Chieti, Italy June 24-27.

2) For training for the EA Professionals Curriculum (EA Intervention for non-parental caregivers, including professionals who work in the child care field and/or who are preschool teachers or teacher trainers), write also to the above address for distance-training videotapes and materials and to discuss distance supervision of your work. The format is group (informational on emotional attachment, emotional availability, and mental health) as well as on-site coachings to increase the likelihood that children will become securely attached to the nonprofessional providers who play an important role in their lives. The program is evidence-based.

3) For the EA Parent Curriculum (EA intervention with parents), write also to the above address for distance training videotapes and materials, and discuss plans for distance supervision. The program is evidence-based.

For in vivo training on the EA Curricula (i.e., the two above-described EA interventions ), 5 days are needed. These 5 days include training on the EA Scales (BASIC) and training on the two curricula (ADVANCED). Having a master’s degree is a prerequisite for this training, although a supervisor may potentially speak for individuals who do not have a master’s degree but may have extraordinary experiences in the clinical and/or child development fields; the supervisor would need to oversee this work.

4) For the EA Clinical Screener, an abbreviated version of the EA Scales and also an observational system that does not necessitate the use of video and can be done with less training. Again, write to the above address for distance training videos and materials. After at least a decade of research on EA, the EA Screener was developed for use of practitioners (child care professionals, psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, pediatricians, and others who do clinical work or who train others). It requires one-day training, in vivo or through the above-mentioned distance training materials.
